I’m Dr Melané van Zyl, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), a Master of Medicine (MMed Psych) and a Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists (FC Psych).
Outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services in the Vaal Triangle
I set up my first private practice in 2005 and now work from two hospitals in the Vaal Triangle – Medi Village in Vereeniging and Mediclinic Emfuleni in Vanderbijlpark.
As well as providing a range of psychiatric services for individuals or groups on an outpatient basis, I also work alongside multi-disciplinary teams to deliver two-week inpatient programmes at both Netcare Vaalpark in Sasolburg and Nurture Physical Rehabilitation & Wellness Hospital in Vereeniging.
Please see Contacts for hospital details and directions.
Psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and body-mind modalities
With psychiatry and mental health problems slowly being freed from stigmatisation, I expanded my clinical knowledge beyond psychiatric treatments to provide a range of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and body-mind modalities such as mindfulness-based interventions, meditation, yoga and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR).
Ancient mental health wisdom for a modern age
Although the wisdom is ancient, the mental wellness movement is still young enough that we can learn from its greatest teachers. I feel privileged to have worked with mindfulness teachers who have been trained by Jon Kabat-Zinn. My EMDR teacher was taught by Francine Shapiro, my Kundalini yoga teacher has been trained by Yogi Bhajan. And Peter King, who trained under Marsha Linehan, now teaches me dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).
Professional psychiatric bodies and regulations
I have huge respect for the clients and professionals I work with and adhere to the strict guidelines of governing bodies I operate under: the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP), the Institute for Mindfulness South Africa (IMISA), the Jungian Association of South Africa, and my funding partners (Medical Aids).
My offices are in three hospitals in the Vaal Triangle: Medi Village in Vereeniging, Mediclinic Emfuleni in Vanderbijlpark, and Netcare Vaalpark in Sasolburg. I offer all services related to general psychiatry, which includes the diagnosis and treatment of all mental disorders for individuals and groups, on an in- or outpatient basis. I have an interest in developing and presenting inpatient programmes and, together with multi-disciplinary teams, offer two-week programmes in Netcare Vaalpark and Nurture Wellness in Vereeniging.
Furthermore, I believe it is of utmost importance
that I am an embodiment of the practices which I
study, practice and teach. It is only from this space
that true, lasting healing can be achieved.
We live in exciting times! Psychiatry and mental health problems are slowly being freed from stigmatisation. Although the wisdom is ancient, the mental wellness movement is still young enough that we can learn from its greatest teachers. My mindfulness teachers have been trained by Jon Kabat-Zinn, my EMDR teacher was taught by Francine Shapiro, my Kundalini yoga teacher has been trained by Yogi Bhajan, and Peter King, who trained under Marsha Linehan, teaches dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). What a privilege!
